LANDMANNALAUVEGUR, a trip across highland Iceland

"An active adventure trip across the most fantastic places in Iceland"

Our trip starts in Vík , where we can find Dyrhólaey , a black-sand beach, considered to be one of the ten best beaches in the world, as well as great colonies of birds such as puffins, artic terns, skuas, etc. From there, we will start to enter the heart of the island by bike.

Along our four-day-cycling journey, we will admire the island's well-known and fascinating green prairies, black volcanic sands, and enjoy the lonely turquoise lakes.

We will walk and ride along the lunar landscapes of the volcanic desert in the Icelandic countryside, and climb Hekla , an active volcano, which last erupted in the year 2000. Fording glacial rivers, we will reach Landmannalaugar , the most magical spot in Iceland. There, the mountain peaks are covered by a great range of colours, and fumes escape from between the fissures on the lava fields, demonstrating the area's geothermic activity. It is, indeed, in this zone where we find the most natural and popular hot springs in the country.

From Landmannalaugar , we will start the “ Laugavegurinn ” or “Hot spring route” to Þórsmörk , regarded as Iceland's most impressive route, and which could, eventually, become tough, considering the unpredictable Icelandic weather. Nevertheless, we will be enchanted by its unique, breathtaking landscapes.

We will walk along obsidian fields, glaciers, hot springs, steam vents, and solid lava. We will also climb colourful mountains, wade across rivers, and behold the icebergs in the glacial lakes. All of this will take place in the uninhabited zone of Iceland.

Once in Þórsmörk (or Thór’s Forest, the most valued and protected forest in the country), the path will lead us between Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers, and back to civilization at the famous Skógafoss waterfall. From there, we will depart to Reykjavík , capital city of the country, but not before visiting symbolic places such as Þingvellir (the seat of the historic Icelandic parliament and the place where the Eurasian and American plates meet), Geysir (geyser after which all geysers in the world are called), and Gulfoss (a famous and amazing waterfall). One last free day in Reykjavík will give us the chance to enjoy the city freely, and take part in interesting activities as visiting “The Volcano Show”, whale sighting, horse riding, etc. When the day ends, we will enjoy the city's night life. All in all, a fifteen-day-journey, by bike and on foot, during which we will enjoy nature and adventure in the most active way, without forgetting the magic Nordic light, the midnight sun, and the Aurora Borealis.
